Only a couple of weeks ago we excitedly reported that our client Ultra Global PRT’s new website had gone live, so you can imagine how elated we were to come across this lovely article featuring them on the BBC news site. The technology report looks at a new wave of innovative transport methods which are set to change the way we commute forever.

Ultra’s Personal Rapid Transit pods are at the centre of the feature looking in particular at the pods at Heathrow Airport, which have been successfully taking passengers from the car park to Terminal 5 quickly, easily and driven entirely autonomously.

We worked closely with Ultra to create their brand identity and website design. It’s really great to see them gaining publicity for what is a truly ground-breaking and unique form of eco friendly transport!

We are super excited to show off our client Ann’s Cottage’s new website which went live just last week.

Ann’s Cottage is one of the largest retailers of surf wear and accessories for guys, ladies, girls, kids and toddlers in Cornwall. The surfing retailer wanted to match their online presence to the huge retail store status, which is why they asked us to create this high functioning and super user friendly ecommerce site. We like to think that the design looks pretty ‘rad’ too!

A warm welcome goes out to Russell and Brittany who are the newest additions to the Bristol Team.  Russell has joined Jump as our Apprentice Front End Web Developer and has spent his first few weeks getting to grips with the trials and tribulations of coding!  Russell joined us as part of the Evening Post’s ‘100 in One Hundred’ campaign which set out to place 100 apprentices in Bristol companies over a period of one hundred days. Russell is keen to develop his programming knowledge and has loved working at Jump so far.  

The lovely Brittany has just started at Jump as an Account Manager and is already well on her way to developing great relationships with our clients.  Brittany’s role involves working closely with Jump’s designers and developers to ensure projects run smoothly and that our clients stay happy and well looked after. She is looking forward to getting fully stuck into her role!

We are very pleased to announce that our client Ultra Global PRT’s brand new website has just gone live!

Ultra are behind the revolutionary computer- driven vehicles known as ‘pods’, which aim to provide convenient, comfortable yet sustainable transport for up to four passengers. The pods have just been rolled out in Heathrow Terminal 5 and are also one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport ever developed, thanks to Ultra system’s light weight infrastructure and eco-friendly battery power.

Taking on this project was incredibly exciting for Jump, as we not only designed and built their new website, but also spent time working closely with Ultra Global to develop their brand identity. To have been part of this project was a real pleasure for us!

A huge welcome to Neneh and Chris who have recently joined the Bristol team. Chris is on a one year placement as a trainee programmer, he is currently studying at Bristol UWE doing web design and will go back to UWE next year to finish his studies. Chris is keen to gain experience in working within a commercial environment as well as developing his programming knowledge. So far Chris has proved himself to be an invaluable member of the team.

Neneh has just finished her degree in communication and media at Bournmouth University and has joined Jump this week as an account manager. When asked about her new position, Neneh answered,

“I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the role and developing a positive and proactive relationship with my clients.” We look forward to introducing our clients to the lovely Neneh.

This morning on the train I overheard a man sharing his experience with his colleague about his wife – apparently suffering massive ordeal of unfortunate events. It went something like, “ She was left there to fester for almost a week before they did anything. It’s a good thing that this other Doctor came along and was around.She took over and sorted it all out. Obviously she knew how to handle the situation. The older doctors are just out of touch and don’t know [follow or aware of] how to treat some conditions. They just leave you to die. Anyway, she is quite good.”

Interesting conversation I thought. I always expect doctors to save lives and that their wisdom and medical knowledge would increase over time – until they die. However, I can somewhat relate to what the man said. This made me think of how what he said relates to other professions, especially designers; mainly because I work in the design industry.

Like medicine, design is advancing rapidly on a daily basis. No longer do we see just static html pages with a few pictures and text put together. We have great designs which bring businesses website alive to visitors. Professionals need to keep afresh with the trends and technologies to remain experts in their field. But how many do so?

Are the older web designers and developer interested? Do they have the willingness and energy to learn new things or are they like some older doctors just satisfied with giving your business a prescription of out of date designs? What about new designers then… just out from university or college? Don’t they have a fresh eye and are more up-to-date on trends or are they inexperienced? One can also argue that younger designers have less experience as to what works in the industry and the older one know what doesn’t.

Is this true across the board? There are many factors that a website designer or agency need to take into consideration and implement before, during and after a project. Some issues are simple. Others are more complex.

For instance, a designer has to consider the look and feel for potential users. The design has to be fit for the business. The products and services have to be presented to the visitors (new or potential customers) in the best possible way for conversion. It is not all about fancy/flashy pages. The site architecture has to be search engine friendly. Basic level of search engine optimisation should always be implemented.

Since social media has become a big part of our lives it’s no point ignoring it either. Some designers are either anti- “social-media” or have phobia regarding this. All avenues have be examined to see if they are fit for the business and integrated into the design where possible. All designs will become out of date at some point. It is inevitable. However, the rate or expiration of a design is all down to the doctor (the professional web designer). Great designers think ahead, prescribing a design that almost future proof, instead of short lived.

When choosing your “doctor of design” check the competence of that person or agency. Are the websites they have designed still alive or dead? What do their customers say? Is there proof that they are passionate about what they do and putting into operation new design elements? The decision you make can kill your business. Choose life! Choose passion and experience –like jump What’s your view anyway?

Bristol based department store Gardiner Haskins wanted to advertise their January sales on the website that we did for them earlier in the year. We created some banners for them to put on their homepage that had impact and standout. We will be producing more for them throughout 2012.
